Buying a THCA half pound: when 8 oz is the right size

A THCA half pound (HP) is 8 oz, or 226.8 g, and public listings checked 2026-10-03 priced HPs from about $175 for small buds to $800 for boutique exotic flower. It is the right size when you want bulk pricing without holding a full pound: a first order with a seller, two cultivars on one budget, slow use, or the weeks left before 2026-12-11.

The market HP price band
Fewer sellers publish a half-pound price than a pound price. In a 15-seller check of bulk THCA sites on 2026-10-02, several sold only by the pound, and none ranked with a dedicated half-pound page. These listed an HP price, rechecked 2026-10-03:
| Seller | HP price | LB price on the same menu | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| High THCA Hemp Flower | $250 to $750 | $425 to $1,400 | 41 strains with both sizes listed |
| Smoke Kind | $175 to $800 | $250 to $1,500 | 181 bulk SKUs; $175 HPs are small buds |
| Carolina Hemp Cafe | from $192.50 | — | Shake and trim |
Read the band by grade. The bottom of each range is shake or small buds; the top is the seller’s exotic or top-grade flower. Across the 41 High THCA strains, the HP cost 52% to 65% of the LB price, with a median of 54%. Two HPs of the same strain there cost 4% to 30% more than one pound. The markup arithmetic for any seller is in Half pound vs pound: the price-per-gram math.
Who a half pound fits
| Buyer situation | Why an HP fits | When the pound wins instead |
|---|---|---|
| First order with a seller | Tests the COA match, weight, trim and moisture at half the exposure | The seller is known and the lot is proven |
| Wants two cultivars | Two HPs from two lots give two profiles for a little more than one pound | You already know which one you want |
| Uses under an ounce a week | 226.8 g lasts about 8 weeks at 1 oz a week, so it is used while fresh | Use is high enough to finish a pound in the same time |
| Cash on hand is limited | Ties up about half the money | The HP markup on that menu is large |
| Buying close to 2026-12-11 | Less flower left over on the federal date | A pound will be used before the date |
Splitting an order across lots
A half pound is the natural unit for splitting an order, because each HP can come from a different lot. Three patterns work:
- One known lot, one new lot. You keep a lot you trust and test another. The next order follows whichever passed.
- Two cultivars in one grade. The price per gram stays about the same and the comparison is fair, because the grade is held constant.
- Staggered HPs. Order one HP now and a second in three to four weeks instead of a pound today. Each bag arrives fresher, and less flower sits on hand.
Each HP in a split order is its own lot, so each needs its own paperwork:
- One COA per lot. The client lot number on each COA should match the label on that bag. A COA for one lot does not cover the other.
- Weigh each bag on its own. An HP is 226.8 g. Weigh bags separately, so one short bag cannot hide behind a heavy one. The arrival routine is in Buying THCA by the pound.
- Keep the labels. If one lot has a problem, the lot number is how the seller traces it.
What to check on a half pound
The checks are the same as on a pound, with one difference: an HP is often packed from a larger lot after testing. Ask whether the HP bag was packed from the tested lot and when it was packed. Then check:
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Lot number | Same on the bag, the listing and the COA |
| Total THC | 0.877 × THCA + delta-9 THC, as printed on the COA |
| Contaminant panels | Pesticides, heavy metals, microbials and mycotoxins present, not “not tested” |
| Water activity | 0.55 to 0.65 aw (ASTM D8197) |
| Net weight | 226.8 g on a calibrated scale, less any drying loss in transit |
The lab side of these checks is set out in How to verify a supplier COA.
Half pounds and the federal date
From 2026-12-11 (P.L. 119-37 §781; date set by H.R. 6500) the federal hemp test counts THCA, so flower above 0.3% total THC is no longer hemp in any state (CRS IF13136; H.R. 6500 §2019). As of 2026-10-03 no further delay has been enacted, and the date is 69 days, or about 10 weeks, away. At 1 oz a week, an HP lasts about 8 weeks and a pound about 16. That difference is why the HP is the safer size this autumn for buyers who use less than about 1.6 oz a week. State rules differ, and some change earlier; see Buying THCA flower in bulk before December 11.

Questions
How much is a half pound of THCA flower?
In public listings checked 2026-10-03, half pounds ran from about $175 for small buds to $800 for boutique exotic flower. On one 41-strain menu the HP cost 52% to 65% of the pound price. Grade moves the price more than the seller does.
How many grams are in a half pound?
226.80 g, which is 8 oz. A full pound is 453.59 g.
Who should buy a half pound instead of a pound?
A buyer trying a new seller or lot, a buyer who wants two cultivars on one budget, and a buyer who will not finish a pound while it is fresh or before 2026-12-11. If you will use a full pound of one lot soon, the pound usually costs less per gram.
Should each half pound come with its own COA?
Yes. Each half pound should carry the lot number of the COA that covers it. Two half pounds from two lots need two COAs.
