Light-dep THCA by the pound: harvest timing and what fresh crop means

Rows of hemp inside a hoop greenhouse

Light-dep THCA flower is greenhouse or hoop-house flower forced into bloom with blackout covers, so it comes off in runs through summer and early autumn instead of once at the end of the outdoor season. On a pound, the only evidence of when that run was harvested is the lot’s paperwork: the grower’s harvest date, and the sample and test dates on its COA.

Reviewed 2026-10-03. Not legal advice.

How light-dep moves the harvest

Cannabis is a short-day plant: it flowers when nights get long (Scientific Reports, 2025). Outdoors that happens on its own in late summer. A light-dep grower pulls blackout covers over the crop each evening, commonly for about 12 hours of darkness, so the plants read autumn nights in June. Flowering starts on the grower’s schedule, not the calendar’s. That allows two or more runs in one season and lets a grower finish before autumn rain.

The grow method itself is compared with indoor and greenhouse in THCA grades explained. This page covers timing.

Typical harvest windows

The rows below are commonly reported US schedules, not fixed dates. Latitude, cultivar and the grower’s start date move each row by weeks.

Crop What triggers flowering Typical harvest Typically sold dried, cured and tested
Light-dep, first run Blackout covers from late spring June to July July to August
Light-dep, second run Blackout covers from midsummer August to September September to October
Late light-dep and full-season outdoor Natural day length Late September to November October to December
Indoor Electric light in closed rooms Any month Any month

Drying, curing and lab turnaround sit between harvest and sale. A lot cut in late September is often not listed until mid-October.

What “fresh crop” means on a pound

No regulator defines “fresh crop” as of 2026-10-03. It is a seller’s term for flower from the latest harvest. Age changes three things in a bag:

  1. Aroma. In one study, dried hemp flower stored for 12 weeks lost 22.3% of its terpene content on average, while its cannabinoid content stayed stable (Goffman et al., Molecules, 2025). A 2020 year-long storage study found terpenoid levels fell quickly under every condition it tested, while room temperature (25 °C) caused the largest shifts in cannabinoids (Milay et al., Frontiers in Plant Science, 2020).
  2. Moisture. Flower keeps drying in the bag. A pound loses weight as it does.
  3. Look. Trichome heads darken and break with time and handling.

So freshness shows mostly in smell and condition. Over a few months the THCA figure on a COA can still be close to right; the aroma may not be.

How harvest timing shows on a COA

Most COAs carry no harvest date. They carry dates that bracket it.

COA field What it tells you What it does not tell you
Harvest date (when printed) The day the plants were cut How the flower was stored since
Sample or collection date The latest the harvest could have been How long the flower sat before sampling
Received date When the lab logged the sample Anything about the crop
Test or report date When the results were produced The flower’s condition today
Client lot or batch number Which harvest the COA covers Whether the bag in front of you is that lot
Water activity (aw) Whether the flower was dried correctly at test Whether it is still in range now

The order is fixed: harvest, then sample, then test. A lot sold as “fresh 2026 outdoor” with a COA sampled in May 2026 describes an earlier crop. Ask the seller for the harvest date in writing, and check that the client lot on the COA matches the bag. The full lot-matching routine is in How to verify a supplier COA.

Checks for late-season light-dep and outdoor

Autumn runs finish in cooler, wetter air, and the fresh-crop rush pushes volume through drying rooms. Four checks matter more at this time of year:

  • Microbial and mycotoxin panels. Humid air favors bud rot (Botrytis cinerea), and growers fight it by lowering canopy humidity (Buirs and Punja, Plants, 2024). Read total yeast and mold, aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, not potency alone.
  • Water activity. 0.55 to 0.65 aw is the range in ASTM D8197. A rushed dry shows as a figure above 0.65.
  • One run per lot. Ask whether the lot is one harvest from one structure. A blend of runs can vary bud to bud and may not match the sampled material.
  • Trim. Large light-dep volumes often go through machine trimmers. Look for flattened buds and long stems; the stem test is in Buying THCA by the pound.

What light-dep costs by the pound

Prices from public listings, checked 2026-10-02. They are other sellers’ prices, shown as market context.

Listing $/lb $/g
Mixed-light, light-dep and greenhouse full buds, across 15 bulk sellers $300 to $900 $0.66 to $1.98
Plain Jane, bulk light-assisted full buds $562.50 to $688.50 $1.24 to $1.52
Plain Jane, light-assisted smalls $378 $0.83
Marijuana Clones Online, light dep (as reported in a sponsored 303 Magazine article) $650 to $750 $1.43 to $1.65
Commercial indoor, across the same 15 sellers (for comparison) $500 to $1,300 $1.10 to $2.87

Per gram is the pound price divided by 453.59. The dated price on a listing is the only figure that counts.

Fresh crop and the 2026-12-11 date

From 2026-12-11 (P.L. 119-37 §781; date set by H.R. 6500) the federal hemp test counts THCA, so flower above 0.3% total THC is no longer hemp in any state (CRS IF13136; H.R. 6500 §2019). As of 2026-10-03 no further delay has been enacted, and the date is 69 days away. An October harvest that reaches the market in late October has about six weeks of hemp-lane life left. Buy fresh crop in amounts you will use before that date. State rules differ and some change earlier; see Buying THCA flower in bulk before December 11.

Questions

When is light-dep THCA flower harvested?

Light-dep growers force flowering with blackout covers, so a crop can be harvested in runs from early summer into autumn instead of once at the end of the season. Exact dates depend on latitude, cultivar and when the grower starts covering. Ask the seller for the harvest date of the lot.

What does fresh crop mean for THCA flower?

It is a seller's term for flower from the most recent harvest. No regulator defines it as of 2026-10-03. The evidence is the lot's harvest record and the sample and test dates on its COA.

Does a COA show the harvest date?

Often it does not. Most COAs print a sample or collection date and a test or report date. The flower was harvested before the sample date, so that date is the latest the harvest could have been. Ask the seller for the harvest date in writing.

Is light-dep THCA cheaper than indoor by the pound?

Usually. In public listings checked 2026-10-02, light-dep, greenhouse and mixed-light full buds ran about $300 to $900 per pound, against about $500 to $1,300 for commercial indoor.
